Bezalel is a Hebrew slave to Ramses II. An artisan of the highest order, Ramses has kept him in the palace even when all other Israelites have been banned. Bezalel blames El Shaddai for isolating him from his people.

When Moses and Aaron appear one summer, and El Shaddai shakes Egypt to its core, Bezalel must reexamine his anger. Over the course of the next year, Bezalel’s life becomes intertwined with those of an Egyptian child-slave, the captain of the guard, and especially a beautiful young concubine.

When spring arrives, all of them escape with the young nation of Israel. But that’s only the beginning…

Interesting and plausible story of the characters involved in the Exodus from Egypt. I never thought of how the Hebrew slaves had the skills to build the Tabernacle. This first book in the series features the life of the artisan who made the Ark of the Covenant. The story as a whole tells what life was like for those in the palace and for the slave, both before and during the plagues. And then it continues with the Exodus itself and the early life in the desert for God's people. Although fictional, it does not stray from the biblical account, only adds fictional details to enrich it. I thoroughly enjoyed it! It held my interest until the end and I bought the other 2 books in the series to finish the story.

In the Shadow of Sinai Journey to Canaan Book 1 edition by Carole Towriss Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

So many books have been written about the exodus, entry into the promised land, but here is a book from the perspective of a little known but true Biblical character, the gifted artist of the tabernacle. The storyline flowed, had enough detail for character development, and I enjoyed the inclusion of the Egyptian characters. The Bible tells us a few Egyptians were in the midst of the children of Israel during the exodus. This was a good reminder of the those of people who may have been in that minority. Th me for the good read.
An expertly woven tale that sucked me in and carried me along for the ride. Set in the book of Exodus when the Israelites were brought out of Egypt, this story follows a slave named Bezalel, letting us see the stories from his unique perspective. Loved the interesting and lovable (well, not the bad ones LOL) characters. The author also tied in glimpses and thoughts of God and His love that can be applied to us today. I really enjoyed it and highly recommend it. Biblical fiction brought to life!
I enjoyed reading this book, and it caused me to dive a little deeper into studying scriptures. But I hate that this story skipped over the dedication of the temple once it was completed. That would have made a great ending to this story as well. In my opinion writing about God's presence dwelling with His people is never boring. Still a good book though. I would recommend reading it along with scripture.
Carole Towriss creates a breathtaking account of the escape of the Hebrew slaves from Egypt. The viewpoint character is Bezalel who is a gifted and skilled boy artisan and worker with ivory and gold and precious stones. He has direct contact with Pharoah who personally requests quick crafting of gifts for scheduled visitors of royal connection. Bezalel's name means "In the Shadow of God," whose protection he needs as he maintains his faith in the pagan environment of Pharoah's palace. Bezalel discovered Meri, a mere child "bride" selected by Pharoah, but his one night with him was humiliating; Pharoah rejected her. When Moses and Aaron give a signal to the observant Hebrew households where Bezalell's family lives, he resolves to sneak Mari out and to his home. The high drama continues throughout the book!
I'm eager for her next book!
I have read many stories of Moses through the years. From simple tales of Moses saved in a basket on the Nile River to historical interpretation of the time period. Carol Towriss's story was not only captivating but inspiring and hard to put down. Truthfully, I gave up sleep to finish the book. Well written. I have raced to read each sequel . to
I really wanted to like this book but I just couldn't. I only got half way through it when I finally called it quits. Probably my biggest complaint was the simplicity in the writing. I found myself often thinking that this was really written for the YA crowd even though I could not find anything online that indicated that it was. So aside from the juvenile feel to the story, I also just finally realized that I didn't care about the characters nor did I care what happened to them. Basically, I just got bored and decided to move on to something with better writing and more interesting characters. Life is too short and there are way too many good books out there to waste time reading something on the low end of mediocre.
This novel will pull you into love and loss, and then sweep you across the sands of time. Be prepared to have your heartstrings plucked to the music of God's song of love in sickness and in health, and in times of richness and want. In the Shadow of Sinai (Journey to Canaan Book 1) a satisfying and compelling historical romance sure to win fans early for the entire series. I have read all three in the series, In the Shadow of Sinai, By the Waters of Kadesh and The Walls of Arad, all excellent books. They can be read as a series but all of them can stand alone. Filled with the magical tale taken from the Biblical times of old, I highly recommend these books. Well done Ms. Carole Towriss, thank you for sharing your great and blessed books about the “Journey to Canaan”. A true winner.
